This guide will explain the possible speed issues you may encounter and how to deal with them on different devices.
When you connect to the internet without a VPN, all of your traffic flows from your device to the final destination and then back to you. However, when you use a VPN, you connect to one of Surfshark's servers. Therefore, all your traffic flows from your device to the VPN server, and only then it reaches the final destination. Afterward, when the requested data flow back to you from the final destination, it goes through the VPN server once more and only then to your device.
This process defines how VPNs work in general. During this process, all your sent and received data is heavily encrypted. Therefore you may notice some decrease in your internet speed.
Usually, internet speed is not highly affected. However, other factors come in to play as well, such as:
- The distance between you and the server
- The number of users on the same server
- The VPN protocol used
- Your actual internet speed
These factors might affect the speed even we do not apply any speed or bandwidth limits and keep our servers regularly monitored to maintain optimal performance.
If you notice that speed is slower than usual, you can make some minor adjustments to improve it.
