Windows slow speed troubleshooting

Some decrease in speed is expected when using a VPN. Feel free to take a look at our article where we have described potential changes in your connection speed.

If you have noticed, that the connection speed has decreased more than it should, try adjustments below.


  • Change the current protocol on the Surfshark app.

    To do that, open the Surfshark app, navigate to Settings -> Advanced -> Protocol and change the default protocol to OpenVPN/UDP. If that does not help, change the protocol to IKEv2.


  • Try other servers.

    Sometimes one server location might be faster compared to others. That depends on the server load, the distance between you and the server or some other external factors.

    Go to the Locations page on our app and test several different locations. Choose less loaded servers (you will see a gray bubble indicating the load on a specific server)


  • Restart your device.

  • Restart the router/modem.

  • Temporarily disable the Windows Firewall or the antivirus software if you have it running.

  • If you use some file-sharing (torrenting) software, disable it and test the speed again.
