How to set up WireGuard on Keenetic router

In this article, you will learn how to set up a manual WireGuard connection on your Keenetic router.

Note: WireGuard VPN support is implemented for current generation Keenetic devices, starting from KeeneticOS version 3.3

Here are the steps that we will go through:

Get your key pair

There are two ways we can go from here - either you already have generated a key pair and you'll be able to use it, or we will have to generate one. If you do have a key pair already, continue the tutorial as usual, and if you do not have one, click here.

I have a key pair

  1. Go to this page, choose the Router option and click on WireGuard.

  2. In the next window, click on I have a key pair.

  3. Enter your public key and hit Save.

I don't have a key pair

  1. Go to this page, choose the Router option and click on WireGuard.

  2. In the next window, click on I don't have a key pair.

  3. Click on Generate a new key pair.

Note: once the key pairs are generated, copy them and store them on your device, as you will not be able to check them again.

Choose a server

Once you have your key pair, you'll be able to see a Choose a location button - once you click on it, you'll be greeted with the full list of available locations to connect to. Select one and hit the download button.

Configure the interface

  1. Next up, open your browser and enter your Keenetic router's interface. To do so, open a browser of your liking, and enter this address into the URL bar: my.keenetic.net

You can also simply enter the Gateway IP address into the URL bar. By default, it is 192.168.1.1

Now, proceed to log in to your router (default username - admin and password 1234)

  2. Now, navigate to System Settings -> Component options

  3. Type in ‘WireGuard’ in the search bar, check the box next to ‘WireGuard VPN’ and click ‘Install the update’ button.

  4. In the pop-up that comes up, click ‘Confirm’ to continue with the installation. After it is done, reboot the router.

  5. Once rebooted, open up the router interface again and select the ‘Other connections’ menu. Click the ‘Import from a file’ button and select the file from Step 4.

  6. Click on the added connection (Not on the switch)

  7. Once there, check the box ‘Use for accessing the Internet’.
If the listen port is not inserted, input 51820.

After done, make sure to click the Save button.

  8. Next up, click on the Connect switch.

  9. Last but not least, open the ‘Connection priorities’ menu and move the added VPN connection to the top so that it is the first and then click Save.

Make sure the connection is successful

And that is it - you’ve learned how to set up a WireGuard connection on your Keenetic router. It's always recommended to check whether your connection was successful after setting up a VPN for the first time. This can be easily done by doing an IP leak test and a DNS leak test which is available on our website
