How to set up Surfshark on Nvidia Shield

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to install and set up the Surfshark VPN app on your Nvidia Shield, log in, connect to the VPN, and use the search bar.

Before you start

  • Make sure you have an Nvidia Shield running Android 7.0 or later;
  • You will need an active Surfshark subscription (available on the Surfshark pricing page).

    NOTE: The app does not support Ethernet cable connections on Nvidia Shield running Android 9 and 12. Additionally, if your Nvidia Shield is running Android OS 6.0 but under OS 7.0, you will need to download and install the Surfshark Android VPN .apk app.

Here's what to do

Install the Surfshark app

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Nvidia Shield and search for Surfshark.
  2. Press Install:

Log in to the app

  1. Once the installation is complete, click Open or find the Surfshark icon in your installed apps menu and open it.
  2. On the welcome screen, you'll see three options. Choose the login method that works best for you.

  3. You can either press Continue with Google — the fastest way to log in if you have a Surfshark subscription under your Google account — or choose the Log in option, where you will be taken to the QR code screen:

QR code or login code

  • If you're already logged in to the Surfshark app on your phone, scan the QR code with your camera to log in on your TV:

  • Alternatively, open the Surfshark app where you're already logged in, go to Settings > My account > Enter login code, and enter the code from your TV. For more information, follow our article on how to log in to Surfshark with a code.

Email and password

  • At the bottom of the QR code screen, click Log in with email:

    alt=""

  • Enter the email address and password associated with your Surfshark account and click Log in:

    alt="Enter email in the upper section, and your password in the lower section, then press log in, or forgot password if you have forgotten it.

Connect to the VPN

  1. Once logged in, you'll see the Surfshark home screen. To connect instantly, press the Fastest recommended location to connect to the VPN:

  2. Once connected, the home screen will display a green Connected status with the location you're connected to. Your internet connection is now secure:

Browse and select VPN locations

Surfshark has 4,500+ servers in 100 countries — use the search bar at the top of the home screen to search and connect to any preferred VPN location.

  1. Navigate to the search bar with your remote and press it:

    alt="Select and press the search locations button at the top of the home screen"

  2. Type in your preferred location — you can use just the two letters that indicate a country, such as US, IT, EN:

    NOTE: Choose the VPN location depending on which streaming service you're trying to access. If you're accessing a US streaming service, connect to any US location.

Verify your connection is working

After setting up Surfshark, confirm that your VPN connection is working properly. You can do this by performing an IP leak test and a DNS leak test on our website.

Customize your experience

Now that you are connected, you can explore more features to enhance your privacy and tailor the app to your needs. As the steps and interface are identical to Android TV, to do that, follow these articles:
