In this article, you will learn what might cause slow connection issues on your Android TV device when connected to a VPN and how to avoid them.
NOTE: Some decrease in speed (around 30 %) is expected when using a VPN for Android TV. Feel free to check how to troubleshoot speed problems.
Try connecting to a few different server locations
Try connecting to the Fastest server and other available servers. We also recommend trying servers that are close to your physical location.
Change the connection protocol
Changing connection protocols can resolve slow connection speeds. To change the connection protocol, follow the steps below:
-
Go to the Surfshark application.
-
Click on Settings.
-
Choose Protocol.
Make sure to try out all available protocols and see if the speeds remain the same.
Disable potentially interfering applications
It's possible for another VPN application installed on your device to slow your VPN connection. To avoid this, disable your antivirus and remove any other VPN applications. Then, restart your device.
Change device DNS addresses
Navigate to your device's Network & Internet settings and change the DNS addresses to Surfshark ones:
162.252.172.57
149.154.159.92
Once you finish making the changes, try connecting again and checking if the speed has improved.
Disable IPv6
IPv6 addresses are not supported by Surfshark yet; therefore, they can interfere with your connection speed. We recommend turning them off, which you can do by:
- Go to your Android TV settings.
- Select Network & Internet or similar.
- Select your currently active network and disable IPv6.
If there is no option to disable IPv6, your TV may not support such a setting. In that case, try disabling IPv6 on your router.
