How to set up a manual WireGuard connection on a router?

In this article, you will learn how to set up a manual WireGuard connection on your router.

Yep, we are finally introducing the manual WireGuard connection method, which you will be able to use on almost any device, and in this article, we will cover the topic of routers.

Here are the steps we will go through:

Check if your router is compatible

First things first, you will need to make sure that your router is supporting a WireGuard manual connection method. All of us have different routers in our homes, which means that you will have to do some research to find out whether your router is compatible with WireGuard. Simply enter your routers make and model into any search engine and try to find out whether it supports a WireGuard VPN client.

As of our own research, WireGuard works best with OpenWRT or DD-WRT router firmware.

I have a key pair

For any manual WireGuard connection you will need to have a key pair, below you will find information on how to get one.

Note: If you do not generate key pair before downloading the configuration file, the file will be missing your key pair. In such cases, you will need to generate a key separately and input it manually into missing fields.

I don't have a key pair

  1. Go to this page, choose the Router option and click on WireGuard.

Connect to the VPN

Lastly, you will need to connect to the VPN. Copy the Server IP address, and your public key, and connect!
