How to troubleshoot Surfshark VPN browser extension issues

In this article, you will learn how to troubleshoot various Surfshark VPN browser extension issues.

Connection issues using Surfshark browser extension

If you're having trouble connecting with the Surfshark browser extension, these common fixes can often resolve the issue:

  • Check conflicting connections

Ensure you are not connected to the Surfshark desktop app and the browser extension simultaneously. This "double VPN" connection can cause errors. Disconnect from the desktop app first, then try connecting again with the browser extension.

  • Try a different server location

You might be unable to connect to one particular server or your Dedicated IP if it's experiencing temporary issues. If you can't connect to your first choice, please try connecting to several other locations:

    • If you can successfully connect to other server, the problem is likely with that specific server or your Dedicated IP server. Please wait a few minutes and try again, or contact support if it remains unavailable.
    • If connection to other servers are unsuccessful, the issue is likely with your browser or network, not a specific server. Please continue with the other troubleshooting steps in this guide.

  • Disable other extensions

Other VPN, active ad-block extensions or antivirus apps can interfere with Surfshark. Temporarily disable them, restart your browser, and try connecting again.

  • Disable the CleanWeb feature:
    1. Click the cogwheel icon to access the settings:

    2. Click CleanWeb settings:

    3. Toggle the Ad blocker off:

  • Try out the Surfshark extension on a different browser. If you are using Chrome - try Firefox or Edge. The issue might be related to your browser instead of the extension.
  • Try reinstalling the Surfshark VPN extension on your browser. See how to do it on Chrome or Firefox.
  • Reinstalling the browser itself.

Extension application issues

  1. Make sure you have your antivirus applications (they can be extensions as well) or any ad-blockers disabled. These two are the main causes of extension issues.
  2. Try out the Surfshark extension on a different browser. If you are using Chrome - try Firefox or Edge. The issue might be related to your browser instead of the extension.
