In this article, you will learn how to use 2FA through your email address or the authenticator app.

We will go through the following:

  1. What is 2FA?
  2. How to use 2FA through your email address
  3. How to use 2FA through an authenticator app

NOTE: If you no longer have access to your authentication codes, check our guide on what are 2FA recovery codes.

What is 2FA?

Two-factor authentication is a commonly used security method that helps prevent specific types of attacks, such as brute-forcing. It introduces an additional step when you’re logging in, which, in turn, makes it much harder to guess your password with automated tools.

There are two ways to use 2FA — through your email address or the authenticator app. An email address code will only work for the current login attempt, while the code on the authenticator app will reset every 60 seconds. To set up 2FA on your account, follow this guide on how to enable 2FA on your Surfshark account.

How to use 2FA through your email address

  1. Using your email address for 2FA authentication will send you a new code each time you attempt to log into the Surfshark website or the Surfshark app. Open your email, and you should see a recent letter containing your current 2FA authentication code.

  2. Afterward, you can use this code to log into the website. Click Verify once you input the code.

  3. If you are logging into the Surfshark application, the prompt will look very similar. Input the 2FA authentication code and click on Verify.

How to use 2FA through an authentication app

  1. If you are using an authentication app like Google Authenticator or Authy, use the code you see on the app for logging into either the Surfshark website or the app.2FA4.png

The authentication code input procedure is identical to the email procedure, and the main difference is that you receive a code from an app instead of an email.
