Where to find servers for a manual connection?

In this article, we will walk through the steps needed to connect to a different server manually.

Manual connection does not require the Surfshark app to be installed, and it can be used on various operating systems or routers.

You will need a manual setup on Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, or a router alongside an active Surfshark subscription, which you can purchase on Surfshark pricing page.

We will cover the following:

  1. Changing a server when connecting via OpenVPN
  2. Changing a server when connecting via WireGuard
  3. Changing a server when connecting via IKEv2

Changing a server when connecting via OpenVPN

  1. Enter the Surfshark login page and log in. Then, click on VPN > Manual Setup > Desktop or mobile > OpenVPN to navigate to the Credentials tab.

  2. Once there, make sure that you are in the Credentials tab and click on Generate credentials. If you have generated your credentials before, go to step 3.

  3. Click on the Locations tab.

  4. Select a server of your choice and click the download icon next to it.

  5. Press on Download UDP or Download TCP depending on which protocol you'd like to use.

We recommend the UDP protocol because it tends to be faster, but feel free to find out more about Surfshark protocols and decide for yourself.

  6. Upload the downloaded configuration file to the manual configuration setup on your device/router.

Changing a server when connecting via WireGuard

  1. Enter the Surfshark login page and log in. Then, click on VPN > Manual Setup > Desktop or mobile > WireGuard to navigate to the Credentials tab.

  2. In the following section, if you do not have a key pair, you'll have to generate one by clicking on I don't have a key pair. Otherwise, select the Locations tab.
  3. Click the download icon on next to the location of your choice.

  4. Click Download WireGuard configuration files.

  5. Upload the downloaded configuration file to the manual configuration setup on your device/router.

Changing a server when connecting via IKEv2

  1. Enter the Surfshark login page and log in. Then, click on VPN > Manual Setup > Desktop or mobile > IKEv2 to navigate to the Credentials tab.

  2. Click the Locations tab.

  3. Click the download icon next to the server of your choice.

  4. Here, you will find the server IP, server address, and the ability to download the IKEv2 certificate.

  5. Input the details of the server you wish to connect to into your manual IKEv2 connection setup.
