How does Smart DNS work?

This feature works by changing the DNS addresses on your device from your local ones to Surfshark’s SmartDNS servers based in the US. These DNS addresses will grant you access to US-based streaming services.

What are the things Smart DNS doesn’t do? It does not change your IP address but changes your DNS address to make it look like it's based in a different country (in Surfshark’s case, it's the US). It also does not encrypt your data. Therefore, Smart DNS is for streaming only and not for security purposes and only works on Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus.

NOTE: Please note that using Surfshark services for any illegal activities is strictly forbidden and violates our Terms of Service. Make sure that any use of Surfshark services for your particular activities conforms to all relevant laws and regulations, including those of any service providers and websites you access using Surfshark.

Do you need to use Smart DNS?

If the Surfshark VPN app works on your device, you do not need to use Smart DNS. The Surfshark VPN app will offer you more functionality on any device. Smart DNS is an alternative option for devices not supporting VPN apps.

How to get started with Smart DNS

It’s super easy to get started with Smart DNS. Activate it for your account, put it on your TV or console, and enjoy your favorite shows. Surfshark’s Help Center has tutorials on how to set up Smart DNS on various devices.
