What is HackLock™ and how do I get started?

How to monitor an email with HackLock™?

It is really easy to get started with HackLock™ and get instant control of your email and password security.

  1. Dive into your Surfshark account dashboard: https://account.surfshark.com/

  2. Click on the HackLock™ tab on top of the dashboard. You will see HackLock™’s control panel.

  3. Do you see that Monitor my emails section? Great! Add your first email to monitor any leaked breaches and click the Activate button.

Let’s move on to the next step!

  4. Now you have to verify your email. Don’t worry, we just have to make sure it belongs to you.

In order to verify your email, check your inbox. You should find a HackLock verification letter. Click on the Verify button.

Didn’t get the verification letter? Make sure to check the spam folder.
  5. After you verify your email, it may take a few minutes to check if your email can be found in leaked databases. Once it is done, you will see Active status next to your email address, date when it was last checked, and the most important part - Leaks.

Leaks section will show the amount of databases where your email was leaked.

Click on the arrow pointing down for more details such as date and exact leaked database.

  6. Now you will get a notification in case your email gets leaked again.

What to do in case you receive an alert about a leak?

  • Change your password(s) immediately on all the accounts that may be affected. It’s crucial to change your password on the site where the leak occurred, and anywhere else where you use the same email and password to log in.

Anything else?

  • If possible, force logout of all devices so that any potential intruders are locked out (this applies to all the accounts that are linked to this email address, and especially to the site where the leak occurred).
  • If you receive any suspicious emails, send them straight to spam.

How to scan your passwords with HackLock™?

Is your password vulnerable? We’ll scan the web to find any leaks associated with this password, and we’ll evaluate how secure it is to use it.

  3. We are almost done! Just enter the password which you want to check for the vulnerability or any leaks associated with this password. You will instantly get the result how many times this password has been leaked. Please note that we do not store or monitor your password(s) in any way, and they always remain on your device.

  4. In case your password has been leaked, you should immediately change it. Please note that it’s best to never use the same password on multiple accounts.

What is HackLock™?

With HackLock™ you will get instant alerts when your emails or passwords are found in leaked databases and let you know when they are at risk.

What’s different about HackLock?

We are focused on your security; and we apply a strict no-logs policy to all of our services. While some information, such as your email address, is necessary to provide our services, we understand that you put your trust in us and therefore we protect the minimal information we do have and keep it always private.

Is HackLock™ available on Surfshark apps?

Currently, it isn’t, but we’re working on it! HackLock™ should appear in Surfshark apps in a matter of a few months.

How often should I expect to receive an alert from Surfshark?

That depends on frequency your private details show up in databases, easily accessible by hackers online. There is a high chance that your email address will appear in a data breach if you have had it for a long time and had been using it to register for various services and websites. Even though your information remains completely safe, we’ll constantly update you about what happened in the digital security world.

What should I do with the information you share with me?

If you receive a notification that your information was compromised, you have to change your email password and passwords of all the accounts where you used to register that email. Many people tend to use the same passwords for every account, therefore it is highly recommended to use unique passwords for each account that you have.

With HackLock™, you can also check the password you want to use with our password scanner to see whether that particular password has been leaked before, and you should not use it again. Our friendly support team we’ll help you figure out if you need to do anything else to secure your accounts.

How do you find leaked information and monitor my email?

We are using the API of multiple services and databases which provide information about leaked or breached data.

We check databases and crawl the web every day to find out whether your email or password has been leaked. In case we match your leaked email or password with the data provided by the databases, you get an instant alert about that.

What type of information you can find?

We can find which email has been breached in a particular website or service. HackLock™ will also show the database where we have found the leaked email so you could easily manage your online security.
